Date Tuesday, 8 October 2019
Venue FUJIFILM Head Office

On 8 October, we had the talk-and-demonstration event ‘Edo Woodblock Prints’ by Yukiko Takahashi in the conference room of FUJIFILM headquarters. The representative of ‘Atelier Takahashi’, which has preserved the traditional printing arts since Edo period, gave us an inspiring talk on the background of Ukiyo-e prints and the various techniques of coloring and printing over the years, showing some beautiful prints such as Hiroshige, Utamaro, and so on. And an experienced craftsman from her atelier demonstrated how the multi-colored Ukiyo-e ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ by Hokusai can be produced by layering several separate printings in different colors. 48 participants, including Mrs. Anne Lande Peters, wife of the new minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, were all fascinated by the world of Ukiyo-e prints, through feeling the texture of washi paper, listening to the rubbing sound of printing pad baren, and observing how a beautiful print come to life right in front of us.
