Visit to Sankatsu Yukata Museum
On Friday, 30 September 2022 we visited Sankatsu Yukata Museum in Ningyochowith 17 members including the Ambassador’s wife, Mrs. Joan van der Vliet. Sankatsu Co., Ltd. since 1894 (Meiji 27) owns over 10,000 Ise-Pattern paper and over 500 rolls of yukata fabric which escaped from the fire of the war. Mr. Amano, the chairman explained us about the technique of Nagaita-chugata-zome, fine patterned indigo dyeing which Kotaro Shimizu, craftsman who became the living national treasure in 1955, worked on. They have inherited the technique and the spirit of Edo till today. We were enchanted with the beauty of the indigo dyeing yukata.
