Bus Trip to 'the Town of Stone’ Oya

Date Monday, 22 April 2019
Venue Oya, Tochigi Prefecture

On 22 April, the bus trip was held to visit Oya-machi in the outskirts of Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture. 33 participants first visited Oya History Museum to learn about Oya-ishi stone, which has been quarried since Edo era, and toured the vast ex-quarry site 30meters below ground. Then we admired ancient Buddha figures carved onto the rock wall in Oya-ji temple, and climbed up 27meter tall ‘Heiwa Kannon’ statue. The area was filled with pretty flowers such as flower peach, dogwood, and canola flower. The trip was also the occasion to bid farewell to Mrs. Sari Roels, our Dutch Representative Governor, who leaves Japan in August.  At lunch at a local popular restaurant, a bowl of Hidehira-nuri lacquerware was given to her as a token of our gratitude. We also tried all-you-can-eat strawberry picking and enjoyed spring in Tochigi to the full.
